The team competed at the major league level from 1887 to 1899, first for two seasons as a member of the now-defunct American Association (AA), followed by eleven seasons in the National League (NL). Early names for the team included the Forest Citys and Blues.

History: The Cleveland Spiders is a name that has become synonymous in baseball with failure. In 1899 the Spiders posted a record of 20-134, losing 35 of their last 36 games, an unmatched record of futility. However, just a few years earlier in 1895, the club boasted legendary pitcher Cy Young and won the National League pennant.
